QPAC CONCERT HALL Program Antonin Dvořák Bagatelles Ernö Dohnányi Serenade for string trio Melody Eötvös new work (world premiere) Franz Berwald Grand Septet Indulge in a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of chamber music and in particular, the septet formation, blending timeless classics with contemporary innovation. We begin with Antonín Dvořák’s Bagatelles, arranged by Trish Dean for septet, which transforms the composer’s folk inspired miniatures into a vibrant ensemble showcase. Ernő Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio follows, blending Hungarian charm with fiery virtuosity and showcasing the combined talents of Adam Chalabi, Christopher Moore and Trish Dean. We’re delighted to introduce the world premiere of a new work by Ensemble Q 2025 Composer in Residence, Melody Eötvös, whose imaginative compositions consistently bring a new and exciting voice to Australian chamber music. The program concludes with the Swedish romantic period composer Franz Berwald’s Grand Septet, an exuberant and lyrical gem that needs a much larger place in the masterpiece category of chamber music. |

QPAC CONCERT HALL Program Maurice Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin arr Paul Dean George Crumb Black Angels André Caplet Conte Fantastique (after “The Masque of Red Death”) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 “Adagio Lamentoso” arr Trish Dean Black Angels and Red Death presents a captivating collection of works that explore themes of remembrance, conflict, fantasy, and deep introspection. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin pays tribute to the elegance of Baroque music while mourning friends lost in World War I, reimagined here with Paul Dean’s arrangement that highlights its delicate charm. George Crumb’s Black Angels plunges us into a haunting soundscape filled with eerie, amplified strings and unconventional techniques, reflecting the turmoil of the Vietnam War era. Caplet’s Conte Fantastique, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death, evokes a chilling narrative of inevitability through its lush, atmospheric writing for harp and strings. The program culminates with Tchaikovsky’s heart-wrenching Adagio Lamentoso from his final symphony, presented in Trish Dean’s intimate arrangement that captures the movement’s profound melancholy and farewell to life. Each piece offers a unique window into the composers’ worlds, filled with emotion, reflection, and storytelling. Led by the esteemed guest violinist, Zöe Black and featuring Ensemble Q’s Emily Granger on harp. |

QPAC CONCERT HALL Program Henri Chausson Poème, Op. 25 Robert Schumann Märchenerzählungen (Fairytales) Op 132 Jörg Widmann Schumannliebe (Australian Premiere) Arguably the most exciting baritone of his generation, 43 year old German-British Benjamin Appl returns to Australia to perform for the Queensland Art Song Festival and Ensemble Q. Described by Limelight magazine in his 2023 Sydney Opera House fi ve star reviewed debut as “beautiful, powerful, tender and menacing by turns”, Appl was chosen to perform the European Premiere of Jörg Widmann’s new and incredible realisation of Schumann’s Dichterliebe (Schumannliebe) and now, the Australian premiere with Ensemble Q, in partnership with the Queensland Art Song Festival. Adam Chalabi is known and admired for his exquisitely poetic violin playing and will treat us to a rare performance of Chausson’s Poème in an arrangement by the composer for violin, string quartet and piano. And our Germany-based violist Benjamin Roskams will be flying across the world to join Paul Dean and Daniel de Borah in Schumann’s dreamily romantic Märchenerzählungen. This is going to be a program full of love, poetry and beauty, with a twist. |
