A warm welcome to our 2022 season!
It is with greatest pleasure that we present the 2022 Season of Ensemble Q.
We are so incredibly proud of our friends and colleagues who have worked so hard to adapt and readjust as every pandemic moment attempted to sway us off-course. We have come through it all more resilient, more creative, and an ensemble united by strength, passion and commitment. Special thanks goes to our wonderful audience and financial supporters who have walked beside us, attended our live and online concerts, and carried our spirits with your special messages and generous donations.
Particular thanks goes to Musica Viva, who have shown outstanding care and commitment to Ensemble Q and all of their artists affected by the cancellations.
In 2022 we are launching a new and exciting era for Ensemble Q. We have been Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium for 5 years, through which we have had the privilege of performing in the beautiful Conservatorium Theatre and the opportunity to mentor hundreds of talented students. This residency will continue and evolve in 2022 and beyond, and we are very grateful to QCGU for their ongoing support.
The big news is that we have also been invited to perform as an Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). These concerts will begin in September and will be in reverse mode in the stunning QPAC Concert Hall. This is a huge step for Ensemble Q, and one which we are very excited about. We are also bringing two intimate concerts to City Workshop, after the rave reviews and wonderful experience there in 2021.
For our friends interstate, we will be bringing Ensemble Q to Sydney, Adelaide, Townsville and Bellingen. We look forward to seeing you there!
We hope you will join us in what we believe is a year of celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, and look forward to welcoming you to our concerts. Please enjoy our online brochure below, or email your postal details to [email protected] and we'll send you a physical copy.

ABOUT CITY WORKSHOPAt our City Workshop concerts you will walk down the stairs to the basement of a grand old Brisbane building. The lights are low enough to be inviting, candles illuminate the old brick walls and guide your way to tables where your wine can sit. If you get there early, you’ll have the pleasure of relaxing in the front row lounges, where you can watch the sweat fall from the players’ brows and the rosin fly through the air off bows that are so close that you could touch them. And the acoustic is perfect, the sound of the instruments are enveloped in the history-steeped cavernous interior. This is a special place for special performances that you will not forget. Strictly limited seating, be quick.

QPAC Sunday Series - Sundays 3pm
SEPTEMBER 11 - SEPTET One of the most loved chamber works is the great Beethoven Septet, scored for violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, bassoon and horn. Each instrument takes a solo role and the combination creates a distinctive, powerful yet elegant sound.
Paired with the Beethoven Septet, Ensemble Q opens their residency at QPAC with a new septet by co-Artistic Director and composer of the moment, Paul Dean. Dean's first Symphony was performed in 2021 by the Australian World Orchestra, gaining a host of five star reviews, national and international attention and major commissions. His Septet is majestic, colourful, sad and humorous, and the perfect program partner for the Beethoven. BEETHOVEN Septet in E flat Op.20 DEAN Septet |
OCTOBER 16 - MOZART, MILLS & MAHLERMagic moments will fill the Concert Hall with the incredible arrangement by Klaus Simon of Mahler’s Symphony No 4. The paring down to 14 parts allows each line to be cherished and played soloistically, yet brings the house down with the powerful combination of the complete ensemble. Ensemble Q pianist Daniel de Borah is hailed for his exquisite interpretation of Mozart piano concerti, and in this performance we reveal an even more intimate view of the Concerto no 17 K453, in a much loved and beautiful version for string quintet and piano. Australian composer Richard Mills’ Little Diary of Transformations is a wonderful short work for clarinet and string quartet that deserves to be heard by audiences worldwide and completes a truly beautiful and entertaining program.
