ABOUT THE COMPETITION
- The aim of the competition is to:
- promote the development and refinement of chamber music performance and practice;
- create a flagship event to promote interest in chamber music of all kinds; and
- in doing so, create opportunities for the best young emerging musicians to develop their careers.
- The Queensland International Chamber Music Competition (QICMC) is organised by Ensemble Q Australia Inc, which is Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.
ELIGIBILITY
- The competition is open to all Australian and International instrumental chamber music groups from trio to nonet with or without piano. Groups including voice or electronics are excluded from the competition.
- Each ensemble member must be 35 years of age or younger on 15th May 2020. Proof of age must be presented upon application.
- There is no minimum age limit. Entrants collectively under the age of 18 will enter as Junior Entrants.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Application fees are $50 per member of each group, to be paid at the time of application.
- Applicants must register by completing the online registration form on the competition website page and pay the entrance fee.
- Required documentation includes proof of age, full biography of the group, and photos of the group. Biography and photos are required at entry, and proof of age may be requested after entry.
- The competition has 3 rounds:
- (a) The first round is by mp4 video and must be in one unaltered, unedited take. The video must have been recorded in 2020, for the purpose of this competition. Any videos deemed to have been altered or edited in any way will be disqualified. The first round comprises up to 30 minutes of music featuring 2 contrasting movements or works. Round One videos must be uploaded to one of the following platforms: Google drive (preferred), Dropbox, PRIVATE youtube or vimeo link.
- (b) The semi final round is by live performance on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th July 2020 in the Ian Hanger Recital Hall at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Grey St, Brisbane, and is a public event. Applicants should prepare up to 30 minutes of music for round 2, including at least 2 contrasting works or movements. Subject to the judges' discretion, 4 groups will progress to the final round.
- (c) The grand final round is by live performance in the Queensland Conservatorium Theatre at QCGU from 7pm on the 18th July 2020. For the final round, one or more complete works is to be performed with a minimum total duration of 20 minutes and a maximum total duration of 30 minutes.
- Round 1 works may be repeated for either Round 2 or Round 3, but not both.
- Arrangements of works can only be performed if the arrangement was made by the original composer for the ensemble.
- A chamber ensemble is made up of one player per part.
- The adjudication panel is made up of musicians from Ensemble Q and/or renowned music institutions. The judges will have the option to select movements or parts of the works presented, to shorten the performance or to ask for it to be re-performed. The judges decision is final.
- Ensembles containing any immediate family members of any member of the adjudication panel or Ensemble Q Inc. are ineligible to apply.
- All travel and accommodation costs to the second and third rounds are to be borne by the applicants.
- Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University supports the competition but all responsibility for administration and prizes falls to Ensemble Q Australia Inc.
- All works are to be acoustic, no works containing amplified or electronic instruments can be included in the program.
- QICMC has the right to record, broadcast, film and photograph all entrants and performances throughout the competition. All entrants assign to Ensemble Q Inc. any intellectual property rights held by them in relation to such recordings, broadcasts, film or photographs.
- Prizes in the form of cash and concert opportunities will be awarded to the competition winners. At the discretion of the judges, additional prizes may be awarded in selected categories. Concert engagements as prizes are not redeemable for cash or transferable and are subject to dates and conditions offered by the venues.
- QICMC reserves all rights to promote the competitors at the discretion of the organisers. Official printed programs, posters, flyers and all other advertising is provided by the QICMC. Ensembles are not permitted to design or print their own programs or marketing material in regard to their QICMC performances and entries.
PRIZES
- 1st Prize $5000 Reuben Blenman Award and a paid concert engagement in the Ensemble Q 2021 Season.
- 2nd Prize $2000
- Junior Prize* $1000 (for entrants under the age of 18 only)
- People’s Choice Prize $500 cash
